As we navigated our way through the airport, we couldn't help but notice the prevalence of MERS signs, written mostly in Korean, reminding us of the current health precautions in the country. After exploring the vibrant Insadong area, we decided to make our way to Nandaemung Market, a popular local shopping destination. The market was bustling with vendors selling a variety of clothing and household items, however, we were hoping to encounter more unconventional foods and unique sights and smells. Despite the absence of such experiences, the four of us soon found ourselves longing for a change of scenery and decided to proceed to our next destination.
We found that Nandaemung Market offers a glimpse into the daily lives of Korean locals, with its display of everyday items and products. However, if you're seeking more eccentric and peculiar attractions, you might want to explore other parts of Seoul that cater to those interests. Additionally, by taking the metro from Insadong to Nandaemung Market, you can conveniently travel around the city, appreciating its efficient transportation system.
Discovering the Vibrant Streets of Seoul
Once we had settled Tyler and Kara in our cozy hotel room, Tim and I set out to explore the lively streets of Seoul, immersing ourselves in the city's vibrant atmosphere. Embarking on our second day in Seoul, we eagerly ventured to the Korean War Memorial—an institution that undoubtedly belongs among the most remarkable museums worldwide.
This modern edifice engulfed us in a profound exploration of the Korean War's historical backdrop, its tumultuous battles, and the aftermath that ensued. The exhibits, crafted with meticulous detail, captivated our imaginations. Many of them embraced cutting-edge technology, engaging visitors in an interactive educational experience. Inside a cozy theater, the reverberation of gunshots and cannons synchronized precisely with the film screening, simultaneously startling and enticing us. As the movie finale approached, a dazzling tank materialized behind the screen, its guns ominously protruding toward us. When the tank discharged, the floor shuddered, deepening our immersion in the moment. These innovative exhibits even managed to captivate Tyler and Kara, rendering their enjoyment unmistakable.

Tim and I had eagerly anticipated visiting this historic border between South and North Korea, hoping to experience the JSA (Joint Security Area) and even step foot on North Korean soil.
Due to precautions aimed at preventing the spread of MERS, both the DMZ and JSA were closed to tourists during our visit. This news came as a tremendous disappointment, leaving us questioning our decision to travel to South Korea just days before our departure from Kuala Lumpur. Nevertheless, we have managed to find solace in exploring other captivating destinations within Seoul.
It is impossible to ignore the allure and significance of the DMZ, a place where two nations sit on the precipice of division. Seoulites certainly have a deep affection for coffee, and we discovered that there seems to be a caffeinated haven on nearly every corner. Amidst this thriving coffee culture, we stumbled upon unique tea shops that added a delightful twist to our café hopping experience.
Among the most intriguing finds was the Jeju Tea Café, where we indulged in a selection of extraordinary green tea delights. Our taste buds braved the unconventional combination of a green tea cappuccino, which blended the flavors of green tea and coffee for an interesting juxtaposition.
At Fredo-King, we surrendered to the whimsy of a green tea milkshake crowned with red beans and a scoop of velvety ice cream. The pièce de résistance, however, was the green tea ice flake dish, which delighted our eyes with its vibrant green hue. Despite its stunning appearance, the addition of sweet red beans proved to be an acquired taste that challenged our palates.
Bukchon had definitely left a lasting impression, its vivid green hues and enticing café scene enchanting us with its unique charm. As we continued our 48-hour whirlwind adventure in Seoul, we eagerly anticipated the next vibrant destination on our itinerary.

Having completed our laundry duties, we meandered through the labyrinth of quaint eateries near our lodging, in search of a simple bite. Tyler and Kara were back at our stay, as we pledged to have an affordable and efficient treat, keeping in view our coming early morning flight to Jeju.
Unexpectedly, we settled on a cozy dining option nestled in one of the nearby lanes. Far from a mere nibble, our encounter at this eatery metamorphosed into a gastronomic journey, savoring stir-fried octopus, indulging in a generous amount of soju, and striking up friendships. Our Accommodation Experience
During our 48-hour adventure in Seoul, we decided to stay at the Doulos Hotel, conveniently located near the Jongno-3 subway station. To ensure a comfortable stay, we opted for the deluxe double rooms, which were slightly more spacious than the standard ones. Although compact, the rooms provided a cozy setting with a double-sized bed and a functional desk.
While South Korea is renowned for its blazingly fast wifi networks, we were surprised to find that the hotel's internet connection was not up to par. Despite the low number of guests, thanks to the MERS situation, the wifi speed was disappointingly sluggish. If a reliable internet connection is crucial to your stay, we recommend exploring other accommodation options.
During our time in Seoul, we also discovered a lesser-known fact about the Doulos Hotel. It couldn't match up to the lightning-fast speeds found throughout South Korea. Fortunately, this minor setback did not hinder our overall enjoyment of the vibrant city and its many attractions.
