48 Hours in Seoul, South Korea

During our brief time in Seoul, we had the opportunity to explore the vibrant capital of South Korea before heading south to the beautiful island of Jeju. Contrary to what some may say, there was plenty to see and do in Seoul, making our limited time feel both exciting and fulfilling.

One way to ensure a comfortable stay in this bustling city is by selecting one of the best hotels that not only provide a luxurious retreat but also place you in the heart of the action, empowering you to make the most of your visit. Finding the right accommodation is key to enjoying the myriad of experiences that Seoul has to offer.

As we reflect on our journey, it becomes evident that Seoul surpassed our expectations, leaving a lasting impression on each of us. The city offered a diverse range of experiences, from indulging in delicious new cuisines to immersing ourselves in captivating sights and forming connections with wonderful people.

Since our arrival in Jeju, we find ourselves yearning for more time in Seoul. The city's charm and energy were truly awe-inspiring, making it evident that a mere 48 hours was not enough to fully unravel the treasures it holds. Therefore, it would have been wise to allocate additional days to soak up everything Seoul has to offer.

While embracing the beauty of Jeju, we can't help but reminisce about the thrilling adventure we had in Seoul. From the bustling streets to the stunning palaces, and the vibrant markets to the breathtaking skyline, each aspect of Seoul captivated our senses and left us craving for more.

Dealing With the MERS Epidemic in Seoul

During our summer visit to Seoul, South Korea in 2022, we found ourselves amidst the challenging circumstances posed by the MERS epidemic. Over the course of six weeks, the nation grappled with daily reports of new cases and unfortunate deaths, generating widespread media coverage.

As we stepped foot in this vibrant city, it became evident that preventive measures were taken seriously. Everywhere we turned, we encountered individuals wearing face masks, including the bustling subway stations portrayed on news stations. Despite the international concern, our firsthand experience revealed a populace determined to combat the outbreak and ensure public safety.

In response to the growing uncertainties surrounding travel, some countries have enforced travel warnings against visiting South Korea. However, we found that the local government took decisive actions to address the situation, implementing comprehensive strategies to contain and control the spread of MERS. Our visit served as a testament to their commitment and resilience.

Fortunately, we were able to explore Seoul's captivating cultural landmarks and immerse ourselves in its rich history despite the challenging circumstances. While the MERS epidemic cast a shadow, it was a reminder of the global nature of health concerns and the importance of unity in times of crisis.

After meticulously planning our trip to South Korea for two months, we found ourselves questioning the decision in light of the ongoing epidemic. News reports fueled our concerns, as we contemplated the potential repercussions of visiting South Korea before continuing on to Japan. We were aware that there was a small risk of being quarantined in Japan due to our time in South Korea, though the possibility of contracting MERS, which seemed to be confined to hospitals, was not a major concern. Unfortunately, the impact of the epidemic had already caused a significant decline in tourism, dealing a substantial blow to South Korea's economy during its peak season.

Despite constant debates and last-minute considerations, we ultimately decided to stick to our original plan and embarked on our journey from Kuala Lumpur to Korea.

Today, we can confidently say that we are incredibly glad we followed through with our visit, as our time in Seoul exceeded all expectations. From mesmerizing cultural attractions to remarkable culinary experiences, our stay in the city was nothing short of spectacular.

First Impressions of Seoul

Stepping off the airplane after an overnight flight, we found ourselves in the bustling Incheon Airport at 8:30 am. Despite our fatigue, we were immediately struck by the unique atmosphere of Seoul, South Korea's dynamic capital city.

As we navigated our way through the airport, we couldn't help but notice the prevalence of MERS signs, written mostly in Korean, reminding us of the current health precautions in the country. These signs were not limited to the airport alone; they were plastered in subway stations, temples, palaces, museums, and even in shopping malls, symbolizing South Korea's proactive efforts to prevent the spread of MERS.

Throughout our brief stay, one thing became clear - the safety and well-being of residents and visitors were of utmost importance to South Korea. This was evident in the bottles of hand sanitizer stationed on counters everywhere, emphasizing the country's commitment to ease the minds of those traveling and living here.

Our first glimpses of Seoul may have been through a tired and groggy lens, but the warmth and dedication displayed by South Korea to protect its people left a lasting impression.

MERS Korea

Contrary to the image portrayed by the media, my visit to Seoul, South Korea was surprisingly normal. Despite the global attention on the MERS epidemic, there was no visible panic or widespread use of face masks among the locals. It seems that life in the city continued as usual, with minimal disruption from the health crisis.

Once we arrived in South Korea, our concerns about MERS quickly dissipated. The prevalence of MERS-related discussions and media coverage in the days leading up to our trip turned out to be far more alarming than the situation in reality. Although we did come across a few MERS posters scattered around, there were no other significant indications that the country was in the midst of a health emergency making international headlines.

Overall, our experience in Seoul offered a different perspective from what we had anticipated. The city's resilience and ability to maintain a sense of normalcy amidst the health epidemic were remarkable. Seoul showcased its ability to handle such challenges with efficiency and calmness, leaving a lasting impression on us.

Exploring the Korean Barbecue Scene

Embarking on our culinary adventure in Seoul, our first stop was an authentic Korean barbecue joint recommended by the hotel staff. Though the name of the place was written in Korean, its popularity among locals assured us that we were in for a treat. As we immersed ourselves in the sizzling sounds and fragrant aromas, we realized that this experience would set the tone for our gastronomic exploration throughout South Korea.

Over the next week, we discovered that many aspects of our journey would be filled with delightful surprises, often lost in translation. From intriguing food names to unfamiliar customs, each day brought new opportunities to embrace the unfamiliar and broaden our cultural horizons.

Additionally, the rich tapestry of South Korean cuisine gifted us an array of flavors and textures, proving that Korean barbecue is just the tip of the iceberg. Whether we were diving into savory stews like kimchi jjigae or indulging in the spicy delight of tteokbokki, the sheer diversity of dishes made every meal an adventure.

So, let the enticing aromas guide you as you explore South Korea’s vibrant culinary scene. Trust the recommendations of locals, just as we did, and embark on your own journey to discover the fascinating fusion of flavors that this country has to offer.

Korean Barbecue

After exploring the vibrant streets of Seoul, we stumbled upon a hidden gem - a cozy, unassuming restaurant with a rustic charm. The humble décor featured rickety chairs and slightly worn floors, but it exuded an authentic atmosphere that instantly piqued our curiosity.

As we settled at a round table, our attention was drawn to the center of the room where an open kitchen area showcased a sizzling grill. With a language barrier hindering our decision-making process, we found ourselves at a loss, trying to decipher the Korean menu displayed on the wall. Just when our puzzled expressions began to give away our predicament, a friendly waitress came to our rescue with a menu brimming with vivid pictures and convenient English translations.

Our taste buds enticed, we opted for the beef ribs and mouthwatering pork belly, eagerly anticipating an explosion of flavors. Little did we know that our impromptu dining choice would lead us to discover the true essence of Seoul's culinary scene, where unassuming locales often hold the most delightful surprises.

Shortly thereafter, our table was adorned with culinary delights: strips of raw beef and pork, an assortment of petite dipping sauces, crisp lettuce, and a selection of vegetables akin to haricots verts. A bed of blazing charcoal nestled into its pit was then surmounted by a grilling grate. Our server deftly maneuvered the meat onto the grate using tongs as the sizzle of meat promised a feast to come.

In the brief absence of our server, I took initiative, grasping the tongs to flip the sizzling slices. However, our vigilant server was swift to intervene, gently reproving my attempts in her native tongue before expertly turning the meat. This playful exchange evolved into a recurring jest as I repeatedly found myself the amiable culprit of culinary missteps, each instance punctuated by laughter and lighthearted banter.

Tantalizing morsels of grilled meat are traditionally savored two ways in Seoul: submerged in robust dipping concoctions or nestled in crisp lettuce akin to a local-style burrito, complete with a slice of fresh garlic for an extra kick.

Observing the culinary process, Tim and I noted a common practice—a single set of tongs for both raw and cooked proteins. A subtle unease crept into our minds as we mulled over the possibility of digestive repercussions. Nevertheless, our experience remained untarnished, as we emerged from the meal as healthy as we entered, much to our collective relief and pleasure.

Exploring Seoul on Foot

Following our meal, we embarked on a leisurely stroll to Insadong, an area in Seoul that is widely frequented by both locals and visitors. Known for its diverse shopping options, especially appealing to tourists, we found ourselves effortlessly traversing the length of the main street in no time.

Indulging in the sweetness of ripe cherries, Tyler's day brightened further upon discovering a cozy corner store that offered more than just Turkish delight in the form of ice cream. It was an entertaining affair; with a unique texture that clung to the spoon, the vendor spun the treat in the air with a flick of his wrist, teasing Kara as he offered it, only to yank it back teasingly. Their laughter, sparked by his antics, drew an intrigued crowd, making the shop a lively and memorable spot in Seoul's vibrant streetscape.

Nandaemung Market

After exploring the vibrant Insadong area, we decided to make our way to Nandaemung Market, a popular local shopping destination. The market was bustling with vendors selling a variety of clothing and household items, however, we were hoping to encounter more unconventional foods and unique sights and smells. Despite the absence of such experiences, the four of us soon found ourselves longing for a change of scenery and decided to proceed to our next destination.

We found that Nandaemung Market offers a glimpse into the daily lives of Korean locals, with its display of everyday items and products. However, if you're seeking more eccentric and peculiar attractions, you might want to explore other parts of Seoul that cater to those interests. Additionally, by taking the metro from Insadong to Nandaemung Market, you can conveniently travel around the city, appreciating its efficient transportation system.

Discovering the Vibrant Streets of Seoul

Once we had settled Tyler and Kara in our cozy hotel room, Tim and I set out to explore the lively streets of Seoul, immersing ourselves in the city's vibrant atmosphere. The evening air was refreshingly cool, laced with a gentle breeze, creating the ideal conditions for an enchanting stroll, as we indulged in the art of people watching.

As we walked, the sensory tapestry of Seoul unfolded before us, revealing a captivating blend of sights, sounds, and scents. The bustling streets were adorned with a multitude of shops, restaurants, and street food stalls, showcasing the city's culinary prowess. The alluring aromas of sizzling barbecued meats, savory dumplings, and steaming hot soups tempted our taste buds, hinting at Seoul's culinary treasures.

Our leisurely stroll allowed us to witness the seamless blend of ancient traditions and modernity that defines Seoul. We marveled at the intricate architecture of traditional hanok houses nestled amidst towering skyscrapers, preserving a sense of Korea's rich history. The dazzling neon lights and vibrant signs lining the streets illuminated the night sky, showcasing the city's dynamic energy.

During our walk, we stumbled upon hidden gems like Bukchon Hanok Village, a charming neighborhood adorned with traditional hanok houses and narrow alleyways, providing a glimpse into the city's past. From here, we admired panoramic views of the sprawling cityscape, a testament to Seoul's rapid development and urban liveliness.

With every step, we encountered friendly locals going about their daily lives, offering a warm smile and perhaps a friendly "annyeonghaseyo." Engaging in casual conversations, we discovered their genuine hospitality and eagerness to share their vibrant culture. Language was no barrier, as many Seoulites kindly offered to help with directions or recommendations, making us feel right at home.

As we reluctantly left the captivating streets of Seoul behind, we carried with us cherished memories of the city's vibrancy and charm. Seoul had left an indelible mark on our hearts, beckoning us to return and delve deeper into its rich tapestry, promising even more discoveries for our next visit.

Awe-inspiring Moments at the Korean War Memorial

Embarking on our second day in Seoul, we eagerly ventured to the Korean War Memorial—an institution that undoubtedly belongs among the most remarkable museums worldwide.

This modern edifice engulfed us in a profound exploration of the Korean War's historical backdrop, its tumultuous battles, and the aftermath that ensued. The exhibits, crafted with meticulous detail, captivated our imaginations. Many of them embraced cutting-edge technology, engaging visitors in an interactive educational experience. Inside a cozy theater, the reverberation of gunshots and cannons synchronized precisely with the film screening, simultaneously startling and enticing us. As the movie finale approached, a dazzling tank materialized behind the screen, its guns ominously protruding toward us. When the tank discharged, the floor shuddered, deepening our immersion in the moment. These innovative exhibits even managed to captivate Tyler and Kara, rendering their enjoyment unmistakable.

During our visit, we were inspired by the triumphant spirit of the Korean people who navigated through adversity and rebuilt their nation. The memorial serves as a testament to their resilience and a reminder of the price paid for freedom.

Exploring the museum proved to be an unexpectedly serene experience, as the echoing halls were tranquil, undisturbed by crowds. This quietude was a silver lining amidst the challenges of the MERS outbreak, offering an unanticipated benefit of visiting Seoul's landmarks during this time—savoring the city's treasures without the usual throngs of visitors.

Regretting Our Missed Opportunity at the DMZ

While our time in Seoul during the MERS outbreak had its drawbacks, it unfortunately meant missing out on a significant highlight of our South Korean adventure: the DMZ (demilitarized zone). Tim and I had eagerly anticipated visiting this historic border between South and North Korea, hoping to experience the JSA (Joint Security Area) and even step foot on North Korean soil.

Due to precautions aimed at preventing the spread of MERS, both the DMZ and JSA were closed to tourists during our visit. This news came as a tremendous disappointment, leaving us questioning our decision to travel to South Korea just days before our departure from Kuala Lumpur. Nevertheless, we have managed to find solace in exploring other captivating destinations within Seoul.

It is impossible to ignore the allure and significance of the DMZ, a place where two nations sit on the precipice of division. The site holds not only historical value but also serves as a symbol of hope for reunification on the Korean Peninsula. Thoughts of what we could have witnessed linger in our minds, imagining the tangible tension and contrasting realities just a short distance away.

While we may have missed our chance this time, we remain hopeful that future travelers to South Korea will be able to venture beyond this demarcation line and experience the complexities that exist in this fragile region.

Gyeongbokgung Palace

Situated in Seoul, South Korea, Gyeongbokgung Palace dates back to 1395, making it one of the country's largest and oldest palaces. This architectural marvel suffered damage during the early 20th century under Japanese occupation, but has since undergone extensive reconstruction and restoration.

Once you step foot inside the grand palace grounds, you'll be transported to a world of Chinese-inspired buildings, enveloped by a sturdy stone wall akin to the renowned Forbidden City in Beijing. As you wander through the palace, capturing photos and videos, take in the intricate details of the structures while ensuring the little ones, Tyler and Kara, are equally enthralled.

If you're lucky enough to visit Gyeongbokgung Palace, you can experience a taste of South Korea's rich history, its ancient architecture, and the resilience of its people.

Exploring Bukchon: A Vibrant Blend of Korean and European Influence

Embarking on the next leg of our Seoul adventure, we found ourselves strolling through the captivating streets of Bukchon. The moment we set foot on Samcheong-ro, it felt as if we had been transported to the meeting point of Seoul and Europe, with its charming blend of architectural styles.

Seoulites certainly have a deep affection for coffee, and we discovered that there seems to be a caffeinated haven on nearly every corner. Amidst this thriving coffee culture, we stumbled upon unique tea shops that added a delightful twist to our café hopping experience.

Among the most intriguing finds was the Jeju Tea Café, where we indulged in a selection of extraordinary green tea delights. Our taste buds braved the unconventional combination of a green tea cappuccino, which blended the flavors of green tea and coffee for an interesting juxtaposition.

At Fredo-King, we surrendered to the whimsy of a green tea milkshake crowned with red beans and a scoop of velvety ice cream. The pièce de résistance, however, was the green tea ice flake dish, which delighted our eyes with its vibrant green hue. Despite its stunning appearance, the addition of sweet red beans proved to be an acquired taste that challenged our palates.

Bukchon had definitely left a lasting impression, its vivid green hues and enticing café scene enchanting us with its unique charm. As we continued our 48-hour whirlwind adventure in Seoul, we eagerly anticipated the next vibrant destination on our itinerary.

Green Tea Food

Exploring the charming Bukchon area of Seoul after our delightful food tour was a memorable experience. As we strolled through the historic roads, we were captivated by the small, stone houses concealed behind sturdy stone walls lining the streets. Reminiscent of the traditional Chinese style, the roofs boasted striking tiles reminiscent of our time in Beijing.

One couldn't help but appreciate the intricate woodwork adorning the upper levels of these buildings. Each property entrance featured an elaborate set of wooden doors, adding to the area's allure. However, my favorite sight was undoubtedly the breathtaking view that unfolded before us - a juxtaposition of ancient stone rooftops against the backdrop of Seoul's modern city skyline.

Exploring the Magnificence of Changdeokgung Palace in Seoul

Despite our slight delay in visiting Changdeokgung Palace, our walk through Bukchon and indulgence in green tea cappuccinos made the anticipation even greater. As the second largest palace in Seoul, this grandeur marvel was constructed by the Joseon Dynasty, who were also responsible for the renowned Gyeongbokgung Palace. Although we arrived just moments after closing time, Tim and I were fortunate enough to have a brief glimpse of the expansive palace grounds. Our excitement grew as we envisaged the elaborate complex of buildings we had narrowly missed exploring further. Heading back to our hotel, Tyler and Kara shared our enthusiasm, thrilled by the prospect of returning to this cultural gem in the near future.

With its rich history and breathtaking architecture, Changdeokgung Palace stands as an emblem of Korea's regal past. The palace was a place of residence for the royal family and served as the backdrop for significant political events. It is known for its harmony with nature, with the palace buildings seamlessly blending into the surrounding landscape.

The Highlight of Our Seoul Sojourn

Our exploration of Seoul would have reached its conclusion, however by 9 o'clock, Tim and myself started to feel the pangs of hunger. Having completed our laundry duties, we meandered through the labyrinth of quaint eateries near our lodging, in search of a simple bite. Tyler and Kara were back at our stay, as we pledged to have an affordable and efficient treat, keeping in view our coming early morning flight to Jeju.

Unexpectedly, we settled on a cozy dining option nestled in one of the nearby lanes. Far from a mere nibble, our encounter at this eatery metamorphosed into a gastronomic journey, savoring stir-fried octopus, indulging in a generous amount of soju, and striking up friendships. This spontaneous nightlife indulgence turned out to be a high point of our global escapade. The event was so riveting and zestful that it warranted its unique mention. Discover it here!

Our Accommodation Experience

During our 48-hour adventure in Seoul, we decided to stay at the Doulos Hotel, conveniently located near the Jongno-3 subway station. To ensure a comfortable stay, we opted for the deluxe double rooms, which were slightly more spacious than the standard ones. Although compact, the rooms provided a cozy setting with a double-sized bed and a functional desk.

While South Korea is renowned for its blazingly fast wifi networks, we were surprised to find that the hotel's internet connection was not up to par. Despite the low number of guests, thanks to the MERS situation, the wifi speed was disappointingly sluggish. If a reliable internet connection is crucial to your stay, we recommend exploring other accommodation options.

During our time in Seoul, we also discovered a lesser-known fact about the Doulos Hotel. It couldn't match up to the lightning-fast speeds found throughout South Korea. Fortunately, this minor setback did not hinder our overall enjoyment of the vibrant city and its many attractions.
